New Year Socks

For a few months now, I have been thinking about challenging myself to knit a pair of socks a month in 2008.

My mom gave me 6 different sock yarns for Christmas.

I already had 3 sock yarns in my stash.

Nolan signed me up for this sock club (3 yarns with 3 patterns over 6 months), and he gave me these books.

Twelve sock yarns and lots of inspiration...it must be a sign. Wish me luck!

Instant Gratification

I have been wanting to sew myself a sock bag for a while now, so yesterday I did a quick search on the internet and found this tutorial for a very cute drawstring bag.

I need to find some cord stops to properly finish it. Even "almost done", I am very pleased with my little sock bag.

The perfect size for a ball of yarn and some needles.

It took me about 3 hours with kids. I'm guessing I could have finished it in about an hour without "helpers".

Fun with Yarn

Mom sent me a Wool Winder for Christmas. The kids loved spinning it.

I love the nice neat center-pull ball. How pretty!

I am one happy knitter. Thanks, Mom!

Surprise Socks

Finally a picture of the socks I knit Nolan for Christmas. I was afraid to post progress or finished pictures on the off chance that he might peek in at the blog (he didn't). I am thrilled with the outcome. They fit perfectly, and I finished them in only 9 days!

I used Reynolds Whiskey yarn in Teal (53) with size 1 needles using a Basketweave Rib pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks. I used my Knit Picks metal DPs for the first time, and, since I had bought several sets in each size, I was able to work on both socks at the same time. I felt a little crazy ordering all those needles at the time, but I am now thinking I need to order more. I love the needles!

Sunday Scare

I have been ignoring the blog lately...obviously! Nothing too exciting going on, a little knitting here and there but nothing worth sharing. Until yesterday...

I was sitting in the living room in the morning and Henry managed to get out the front door. I was right there, no big deal, I didn't really give it much thought other than to check the door and make sure it was shut tight. I have child locks on all the doors that access the outside world, but the latch of the door was sticking, making the child lock useless. I thought (keyword, thought) I had fixed the problem.

Around 10:30 I was upstairs and Henry went downstairs telling me he was going to play with Jack (the toddler across the street). I didn't really think anything of it. When I came downstairs about 5 minutes later, I couldn't find Henry. I looked at the door, and the latch was stuck again (and the deadbolt was open...he has been able to do that for months). I looked outside thinking Henry would be right out front or in Jack's yard. He was nowhere to be seen. I sent Gwyneth down the street to look, did one more quick check of the house and dialed the police.

The neighbors and the police were searching when Sue and Jack arrived home (it had probably been about 10 minutes). Sue went into the house to put Jack down so she could help in the search. She found Henry upstairs playing in Jacks room! I had checked Sue's front door which was locked, apparently Henry walked around the house until he found an open door and let himself in.

Just to add a little humor to the incident, Sue called me 5 minutes after we got home to inform me that Henry had pooped in her toilet (and not flushed). Apparently, not only is Henry a common criminal but he has really bad manners too!

I was impressed with how quickly the police responded. They were here in a matter of minutes and, although I only saw one police officer from our end of the culdesac, Sue saw several on her drive back into the neighborhood. Henry has been told he can't visit friends houses alone (especially when his friends are not there), and I have almost stopped shaking!

Vacation Sock

I finished Gwyneth's Dancing Sock while we were on vacation. I was more than 3/4 done with the second sock before we left, so this wasn't really a huge accomplishment. This is the first sock that I have finished with a negative ease, and I am now convinced that negative ease is essential to a well-fitted sock. The yarn has elastic in it, so the socks should fit Gwyneth for a while. She has been wearing them around the house non-stop, so they may wear out before she outgrows them!

It was nice to have a mindless sock on the needle, and I am going to try to keep a stockinette (or simple rib) sock on my needles at all times.
